I used to live on campus while I was attending college. I believe it was the best time of my life. Long-lasting friendships, some love, sisterhood ... The college's library was my number one favorite spot. Can you guess which was my second one? Yup! The cafeteria. I used to spend hours there with friends and by myself.

 

As an international student, it was my place to socialize, even though the weekends were spooky (especially during the first two weeks of January, when everybody was at home, still on the Christmas holidays). I became good friends with Chico. Chico was the college's cook. He came from an Italian family and was about 6.3 feet tall, bulky, and was proud of his white cook hat and apron and his black, enormous mustache. His face reminded me of Mario from Mario Bros. Well, he was like Mario after he ate the mushroom and turned into this gentle giant. I talked to him a lot. In return, my portion was getting bigger and bigger as days went by! He even healed me once and provided me with first aid when I cut my knee with a piece of ice when I slipped. That scar has been part of me since February 1991.

 

Every single time I ordered some pizza or Chinese food to my dorm, I felt I was betraying Chico. Don't get me wrong, his food was delicious, but it was so cold outside that going down the snowy hill to the cafeteria was a real challenge for me. Not to mention returning with a blizzard, getting my boots sinking in the snow, and climbing back up. I'm so fond of those memories that I usually daydream about those times.

 

The other day, I had an epiphany: Hey! I've found a way I could not betray Chico in this era!
